The stunning Adelaide River snakes its way south from the Van Diemen Gulf at Djukbinj National Park to the Adelaide River Settlement on the Stuart Highway. The river is best known for its exciting ‘jumping crocodile’ cruises. Just an hour’s drive south of Darwin, turn left at Beatrice Hill on the Arnhem Highway and follow the signs to any of several ‘jumping crocodile’ theme cruises. Watch crocodiles being fed and encouraged to jump high in the air. The river is also home to a multitude of unique birdlife. The Adelaide River settlement is situated on the banks of the river, 114 kilometres south of Darwin. The scenic village has a rich history. During World War II the area was the site of a major military headquarters.

Cape Crawford is a remote stop at the junction of the Carpentaria Highway and Tablelands Highway. Despite the first part of its name, Cape Crawford is situated a good 200 kilometres from the ocean. Lindsay Crawford was the drover who discovered a spectacular formation known as the Lost City, in the nearby Abner Ranges in 1880. The Lost City covers an area of about eight square kilometres and is dotted with towering sandstone formations. These natural pillars remind many observers of skyscrapers, and are well worth a visit.

Bathurst Island lies 80 kilometres to the north of Darwin in the Arafura Sea and has been the home of the Tiwi Islanders for thousands of years. Nguiu is the largest of several Aboriginal communities operating on the island. All visitors must have a permit from the Tiwi Land Council. Bathurst Island was first sighted by Europeans in 1644, when Abel Tasman passed on his way from Batavia. In 1910 a church minister persuaded the South Australian government to give him 10,000 acres of land on Bathurst Island to build a mission for the Tiwi Islanders. The mission achieved the dubious distinction of being the first place in Australia to experience foreign invasion when, on 19 February 1942, Japanese bombers, on their way to Darwin, bombed Nguiu. In 1978 the ownership of Bathurst Island was formally handed back to the Tiwi people and today the island is run by the Tiwi Land Council. It is said that the word ‘Tiwi’ means ‘people, the people or, perhaps, the chosen people. No visit to Bathurst Island would be complete without a tour of its art and craft galleries. The Tiwi people’s distinctive style is popular with collectors, who snap up bark paintings, textiles, pottery and wood carvings. The exciting annual footy grand final day (which is accompanied by an art sale) in Nguiu is an event not to be missed.

Easily accessed from Darwin, this area is a popular destination for fisherman and easy weekend trips. The Daly River settlement has a population of around 560 and is located 110 kilometres west off the Stuart Highway. The Daly River crossing was traditionally a meeting place for the local Aboriginal people to trade and hold ceremonies. By the end of the 1800s, European farmers, missionaries, miners and pastoralists had arrived. Today the Nauiya Nambiyu community on the banks of the river is home to about 300 people. Here, the Merrepen Fine Art Gallery holds an Aboriginal arts and cultural festival every May or June. The festival includes art sales and an auction, traditional music and dance, bush tucker displays, and a sporting carnival. The Daly River itself is a picturesque tidal river, home to both freshwater and saltwater crocodiles, and a plentiful source of barramundi. Bamboo Creek and Horseshoe Billabong are gorgeous spots to picnic and enjoy the company of rare birds and wallabies. Accommodation catering to all budgets is available at the Daly River Pub, the Banyan Farm Tourist Park, Daly River Highway Inn and the historical Daly River Mango Farm. A three-kilometre walk around the farm takes in various billabongs and the ruins of a Jesuit mission built in the 1800s.

An hour’s drive south of Perth and just a short hop from Mandurah is Pinjarra, the centre of the Murray Shire. Pinjarra is one of the oldest towns in Western Australia and lies on the banks of the Murray River, straddling the South West Highway. Although the district has been settled since the early 1830s, large tracts of land remain untouched and have an air of peace and tranquility. The dignified steam engines of the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway are ready to take visitors on a nostalgic journey through lush farmlands, up the dramatic and beautiful Darling Scarp and into the forest of Dwellingup. The train runs from May until October. If it’s action you want, Pinjarra has both thoroughbred and harness racing, an excellent golf course, skydiving and a multitude of water and land based activities. The Pinjarra Festival in June and the Teddy Bear’s Picnic every November are popular events, as is the Rodeo also held in November. The Pinjarra Visitors Centre is an old post office with a cafe and craft shops. The Devonshire teas are recommended. Pinjarra has a selection of cafes and restaurants, tearooms, hotel restaurants and Chinese restaurants. Beautifully restored historic buildings provide wonderful accommodation for holiday makers. Motel, hotel, caravan park, bed and breakfast and chalet accommodation is also available.

The charming country town of Dwellingup is located an hour and a half’s drive south of Perth. Set among pristine jarrah forest and water catchment areas, Dwellingup offers nature at its best. You’re bound to bump into fellow bushwalkers and nature lovers on this section of the track due to its close proximity to Perth and the lovely scenery on offer. The new Munda Biddi mountain bike trail which begins in Mundaring and will eventually finish in Albany currently goes through Dwellingup as it meanders on its way to Collie. The trail passes through some very beautiful countryside and is becoming a highly regarded and popular trail for mountain biking enthusiasts. There are many places to camp in Dwellingup, but for those looking for a bit more warmth and comfort, hotel, chalet, backpacker and caravan park accommodation is available.
